Namibia Conservation Safaris

TRAVEL WITH PURPOSE.

We are cultivating and strengthening the ever-present relationship between conservation of wildlife and habitat, with the quality of life for rural Namibians. This link between the natural world and the humans who inhabit it, needs support, in order for the long-term protection and preservation of what we hold so dear here in Namibia.

That’s where conservation safaris – and you – come in. Travel deeper with the About Africa Collection of conservancy safaris, as you head into Namibia’s most raw and remote areas, well beyond the typically manicured safari.

Enjoy world class wildlife and immersive cultural experiences, all geared toward the safeguarding of this unique and multi-tiered relationship.

Conservation Safari Inspiration

Travel deeply into the forgotten corners of Namibia and witness how both wildlife and people thrive in these severe yet stunning landscapes, all while staying at our most sustainably-focused properties where conservation is at the forefront of everything they do. Conservation Safaris appeal to the discerning traveller who wants to make their ecological footprint count by taking part in one of the most successful community conservation initiatives in Africa.

Avoid a pre-packaged holiday and seek a real African experience. If this is a return visit, it’s a Namibia you never before experienced. Being one with the community, nature, and wildlife.

Conservation Safaris offer the best of both worlds – a top class safari into a remote, spectacular part of north-west (or north-east) Namibia where you will be welcomed as guests, not merely tourists, by the community owners of the company. The experience is authentic, intimate, and exclusive. The skilled back-up team ensures there are no compromises on eco-safari standards, safety, and comfort.

Sample Travel Plan

Days 1 - 3

Namibrand Nature Reserve
/ Kwessi Dunes /

Twelve beautiful chalets, each with an outdoor shower and star-gazing bed, are placed amongst rolling desert plains with a backdrop of craggy mountains and iconic red dunes.

/ The Reserve /

Encompassing four distinct ecosystems, the reserve was founded to conserve the unique environment and wildlife species of the Namib Desert. A mix of dunes, mountains, rocky outcrops, sandy flats, and gravel plains provides habitats for a diversity of wildlife and bird species, and the Namibrand has been named Africa’s first International Dark Sky Reserve, it is one of the least light-polluted areas in the world.

Day One

Welcome to Namibia. Your adventure awaits in a land of endless contrasts. After being welcomed at the airport, you will depart towards the oldest desert in the world, the Namib, to the Sossusvlei area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Tsauchab river is swallowed by the magnificent sand dunes. Arrive at Kwessi Dunes, a place where time seems to stand still.

Day Two

It is an early morning pre-dawn rise, as you embark on this half day adventure into the Namib Naukluft National Park. Featured will be the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Namib Sand Sea, taking you down an open valley between towering red dunes. Take in and photograph the striking scenic beautify of the area as you drive in, best seen when the light is still throwing shadows off the ridges of the dunes. There will be a chance to walk to Deadvlei, where some 70 camel thorn tree trunks, 900 years dead, remain standing on a bleached clay pan. Perhaps climb a sand dune, and for the fit and adventurous, conquer the towering ‘Big Daddy’. In the afternoon, arriving in the heat of the day back at the lodge, the swimming pool is the place to be. Perhaps an afternoon treatment at the spa? Want more adventure? If you can bear to tear your eyes away from the vast, desert vistas, enjoy quad biking, scenic drives and walks, hot air ballooning, helicopter flights or horse riding.

Days 3 - 5

Swakopmund
/ The Strand Hotel /

The non-hotel, hotel with a residential and warm welcoming feel. Inviting fireplaces, expansive reception and ocean-view outlook. A quick stop-off here as we venture deeper into the remote areas of Namibia.

Day Three

Your journey continues to where the desert meets the Atlantic. The drive is a unique route which rises and falls through the Namib Desert. Some highlights include the Kuiseb Canyon, crossing through the Tropic of Capricorn, apple pies at Solitaire and the moon landscape of the Namib-Naukluft Park. Set along Namibia's spectacularly scenic coast, arrive at the seaside town of Swakopmund. Known for its wide-open avenues, colonial architecture, and its surrounding otherworldly desert terrain. The mix of German and Namibian influences, adventure options, laid-back atmosphere, and fresh sea breeze make it a trendy Namibian destination. You can look forward to several activities, such as quad biking, horse riding, paragliding, fishing, sightseeing, and fascinating desert tours. Perhaps a scenic flight along the skeleton coast?

Day Four

Experience the best of both worlds on this full day tour. Enjoy a catamaran cruise and then drive along towering sand dunes at the iconic Sandwich Harbour. This combo package takes you from the towering dunes of the Namib to the refreshing ocean breeze of the Atlantic.

Days 5 - 12

Kaokoveld
/ Wild Camping + What To Expect /

Namibia's spectacular scenic beauty and diverse flora and fauna can only be truly appreciated on an adventurous camping safari into the remote and isolated regions far off the normal tourist route. Daylight hours are filled with exploring the surrounds and the nights are spent under a blanket of stars with the unique sound of the African bush for company. All camping equipment is supplied by us which includes comfortable dome tents, sleeping rolls with comfortable mattress, proper duvets, cushion, towels and linen, camping fold up beds, electric tent lantern and bedside table, solar bucket showers (1x for every 4 guests) as well as long-drop bush toilets (1x for every 4 guests). Three wholesome meals are served daily at table. Breakfast is "full English" style. Lunch consists of cold meats, cheese, salads, pickles, fresh vegetables and fruit. Dinner is a tasty warm meal cooked on open fire. At dinner, wine and beer are included.

Days Five to Twelve

Today marks the beginning of your conservancy safari, the desert wildlife and conservation expedition. Your adventure starts in Swakopmund, and each expedition is custom designed. Itineraries are not set, as this can limit opportunities that may come up as a result of rainfall, wildlife movements, community events and conservation activities. Options to drive or fly can be arranged. The journey focuses on community conservation in southern and central Kaokoveld. Expect to track black rhino and meet some local conservancy teams who are holding the front line against poaching. Desert elephant and desert lion are the other two iconic species that we will be specially seeking. The safari normally remains within Torra, Anabeb, Sesfontein and possibly Puros conservancies, wild camping where we find the wildlife.

Highlights

Track black rhino, desert elephant and desert lion with the best guides and rangers in these remote Namibian conservancies. Wild Camping is the ultimate conservation experience, getting closer and traveling in alignment with the wildlife and environment.

Days 12 - 14

Ongava
/ Little Ongava /

Designed for privacy, luxury and an intimacy with the land, Little Ongava is arguably Namibia’s most luxurious accommodation with pristine views across the Ongava plains. Little Ongava is perched on the crest of a hill commanding magnificent vistas of the plains stretching for miles to the horizon, offering an extraordinary experience as the focal point of an Etosha journey.

/ The Reserve /

The Ongava Game Reserve is considered one of the finest private game reserves in the region, enjoying global recognition for exceptional conservation, ground breaking research and exciting safari experiences. The reserve is home to ion, eland, black-faced impala, Hartmann's mountain zebra and is one of the few private reserves in Southern Africa where both black and white rhinos can be observed.

Day Twelve

With your expedition coming to an end, so is "roughing it" in our mobile safari camps. Experiencing a true sense of ecotourism, committed to protecting and savouring life in all its natural wonder, we welcome you to Ongava. Soft air, crackling with bird song and a chorus of lion roars, this is just a small, spectacular part of the Ongava experience. Rhino approaching on foot, game drives into the fabled Etosha National Park, nights spent around the fire, watching as some of the world's most illusive and endangered animals drink at subtly lit waterholes. This is your chance to be immersed in the wild. Ongava Game Reserve provides visitors with the ultimate in accommodation, offering comfort, luxury, and a connection to the earth.

Day Thirteen

The surprising mix of peace and adrenaline, the quiet of the bush and the sudden burst of energy as wild animals congregate at waterholes; this is the magic of the African bush, where you experience the unexpected. Ongava is one of the largest private game reserves in Namibia, with over 125 square miles to explore. Climb into an open vehicle for game drives on Ongava and into neighbouring Etosha National Park to view the astonishing variety of life found in this spectacular environment. Lions, black and white rhinos, elephants, giraffe and several stunning species of antelope, including rare black-faced impala, are at home on the reserve. Nature walks, photographic hides, lounging by the pool, or relaxing on your private deck are all wonderful ways to enjoy and reflect on your journey of a lifetime.

Departure

Farewell to Africa - if something like that is possible. After breakfast, you will depart, heading towards Windhoek. Fly options are available as well on request. Richard Mullin wrote: "The only person I really envy is the one who has never been to Africa. He has so much to experience!"
